Yesterday, I went to FTDP (Finish the D@#% Project), where Myra was busily paper-piecing a school of fish. She used all batik fabrics, and people were coming in from the store to check out her work.
No question is dumb! The fabric pieces are sewn directly onto a paper diagram/pattern. Another name is foundation paper piecing. You could used a cloth foundation, also. It's a way to replicate a design precisely.
